So my blog has been going for a few years or so now. Early on I had heard of Alexa, a page ranking tool. It is a basic comparison tool that allocates a worldwide and national ranking of websites. Google being at No1 on the list and Facebook at number 2. Basically the lower your score the higher your rank, 1 being best, above 20 million you don't even rank.
When I first looked up my pages rank on Alexa it did not rank meaning that it was ranked above 20,000,000. A bit disappointing but to be expected. Using some common sense to get more web traffic and semi regular (about every month) blog posts I had managed to get the page rank to about 5,000,000 global rank. For me this is quite impressive when you consider the current rank for global crane powerhouse FavelleFavco is currently ranked at about 7,000,000 or Masterton Homes who advertise quite aggressively are only ranked at above 10,000,000.
I believe Alexa is not foolproof or 100% accurate but can be used as a basic guide, the main downside so far has been the volatility, every week I find my ranking can jump or fall by a fair bit.
I believe the new positive ranking can partly be attributed to lots of traffic I am now getting from StumbleUpon (please click and up-vote, thank you), a growing number of followers and the way that older websites manage to rank higher than newer websites (is a few year really old??)
And I have been told that having the Alexa widget on your homepage increases the website ranking, this could be true, however its a bit ugly so for now I will be refraining from that for now...
