Today the mast of the tower crane was inspected, this is a period inspection that is done when the crane is installed and usually when the crane has its 3 month service. The pins below are called spigots and they lock in the mast sections to each other. A quick visual inspection is given to make sure the spigots are not bent and are in the correct position. Manitowoc has issued a safety alert as these spigots have failed in the past due to inadequate heat treatment, for more information see http://www.cfmeu.asn.au/ohs/alerts/manitowoc-cranes-potain-tower-cranes-safety-alert
In our case today all the pins were fine and it was work as usual
Its a 50 storey climb to the top of this crane, today some adjustments needed to be made on the slew brake
Occasionally the nuts in the tower crane come loose, this is due to the large ammounts of flex in the metal and continual movement. It is essential that they are kept at the required tension and retightened where required.
