I have been many construction sites and have seen several ways of constructing fire stairs. Stairs are very tricky to construct if building out of concrete. The formwork is complicated with precise levels required for the stair treads. Steel reinforcing is tedious and concrete finishing is time consuming. Preformed stairs are available, this eliminates the formwork but they still require reo and concrete. By far the quickest is structural steel, at less than a 1/10th of the time I cannot understand why its not the only way fire stairs are built. Being steel if wet they are slippery however this is mitigated by the use of checker plate. We put in the staircase for 9 levels in one week.
